Good Questions. Helpful Answers.
Have a question about visiting Basin View Smiles? You're in the right place!
We've gathered answers to some of the questions we hear most often, from booking your first appointment to understanding insurance coverage and exploring options for a more comfortable dental experience.
And if you don't find what you're looking for, our team is always happy to help!
Are you accepting new Patients?
Absolutely! Basin View Smiles is always happy to welcome new patients and families to our Bedford dental clinic. Whether you're new to the area, looking for a new dental home, or simply overdue for a checkup, we'd love to meet you. Give us a call at 902-832-4490 or visit our website to request an appointment.
What should I expect at my first dental appointment?
Your first visit is an opportunity for us to get to know you and your dental health. We'll review your medical and dental history, discuss any concerns or goals you may have, and complete a comprehensive dental examination, including X-rays when appropriate. You can choose to book your new patient examination on its own or coordinate it with your next dental hygiene appointment. Our front office team can help determine which option works best for your schedule.
I'm transferring from another dental office. Do I need to request my records?
We can help with that! Once you've completed a dental records transfer authorization, our team can contact your previous dental office to request your existing records and X-rays. Having those records available helps our dentists understand your dental history and plan your care.
How often should I visit the dentist?
There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer! While many patients attend dental hygiene appointments approximately every six months, the ideal frequency depends on your individual oral health, medical history, and treatment needs. Your dentist and dental hygienist will recommend a schedule that makes sense for you.
Do you offer direct billing to dental insurance?
Yes! Basin View Smiles offers direct billing to most dental insurance providers, including coordination of primary and secondary insurance plans. We're happy to help submit claims and predeterminations when needed. Coverage varies between plans, and patients are responsible for any portion not covered by their insurance.
Do you accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
We do! Basin View Smiles welcomes patients covered under the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). The CDCP provides eligible Canadians with financial assistance toward certain dental services. Coverage, co-payments, and any required preauthorizations depend on your individual eligibility and treatment needs. Our front office team is happy to help explain how the program works at our clinic and what you may be responsible for before proceeding with treatment.
How much does a dental appointment cost?
Our dental fees follow the current Nova Scotia Dental Association Fee Guide. The cost of an appointment depends on the services provided, whether that's a routine examination, dental hygiene visit, filling, or more involved treatment. We believe patients should understand their treatment options and associated costs. For recommended treatment, our team can provide estimates and help review available insurance benefits before booking.
I'm nervous about visiting the dentist. Can you help?
Of course. Dental anxiety is more common than you might think, and it's something our team takes seriously. Whether you've had a difficult experience in the past, feel uncomfortable during treatment, or have been putting off dental care for years, we're happy to discuss your concerns and work with you to make your visit more comfortable. We also offer sedation dentistry options for patients who may benefit from additional support during treatment.
What types of sedation dentistry do you offer?
Basin View Smiles offers several sedation options, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, and certain treatments under IV sedation with an anesthesiologist. Dr. Jakob Nickerson has additional training and experience in sedation dentistry, including care for patients with dental anxiety and more complex treatment needs. Not every sedation option is suitable for every patient or procedure. Your dentist will review your medical history, treatment needs, and available options to help determine the safest and most appropriate approach.
Do you offer dental care for children?
Absolutely! We love welcoming little smiles. Our dental team provides care for children of various ages, from early dental visits and preventive care to treatment when needed. Dr. Kholoud Aljiboury has a special focus on children's dentistry and offers oral sedation for eligible pediatric patients aged three and older. We understand that every child is different, and our goal is to help make dental visits positive, comfortable experiences that build confidence over time.
What if I have a dental emergency?
If you're experiencing a dental emergency, such as a severe toothache, broken tooth, swelling, or dental injury, please call our office at 902-832-4490. Our team will assess the situation and help arrange appropriate care based on the urgency of your symptoms and appointment availability. For existing patients experiencing an urgent dental concern outside regular office hours, after-hours emergency instructions are available through our office phone system.
Is parking available, and is your clinic wheelchair accessible?
Yes to both! Free parking is available outside our clinic, and our office is wheelchair accessible. Our treatment rooms also offer some pretty wonderful views of the Bedford Basin. Not a bad little bonus while you're visiting the dentist!
